Beyond the Label: The Emotional Impact of Being a ‘Service User’

Introduction
In health and social care, the term “service user” is everywhere. It’s a tidy phrase used in paperwork, policy, and planning. But for the people it describes, the label can feel anything but tidy.

For some, being called a service user feels like being reduced to a number on a forma case, not a person.  we believe care should always start with the person, not the paperwork.

More Than a Word
Language matters. When someone starts receiving care, they’re often going through one of the most vulnerable transitions in their life recovering from illness, adapting to age-related changes, or navigating disability.

Hearing themselves described as a service user can trigger feelings such as:

  • Loss of identity  “Am I just a client now?”

  • Reduced self-worth  “Is my value only in what services I use?”

  • Emotional distance  “Do they see me as a person, or a process?”

Why the Label Can Feel Limiting
While professionals may use “service user” as a neutral term, many people feel it strips away individuality. Instead of being recognised for their personality, history, and dreams, they risk being defined by their needs.

That can create an emotional barrier between the person and the professionals supporting them making care feel transactional rather than relational.

The Real Human Behind the Term
Every service user is also:

  • Someone’s parent, child, or friend

  • A person with hobbies, opinions, and favourite songs

  • An individual with a lifetime of memories, skills, and stories

When care recognises and honours all of this, it doesn’t just meet needs it nurtures well-being.

How Bes care Makes It Personal
we don’t just create care plans we build relationships. We take time to learn your story, your likes and dislikes, your priorities, and your goals.

That means:

  • Referring to you by name, not by a label

  • Involving you fully in decisions about your care

  • Supporting your independence and self-expression

  • Making sure you feel heard, respected, and valued every step of the way

Because your care journey should be about you, not about what box you fit into.

The Emotional Impact of Being a ‘Service User
The emotional impact of being called a service user is real and it’s something the care sector needs to address.  we’re committed to seeing and supporting the person first, so dignity and identity are never lost in the process.
